This Monday, the NYC Committee on Civil Rights will be discussing an amendment in local law to extend protections against discrimination and sexual harassment to unpaid interns.

The debate to amend local law was sparked in January when an unpaid intern lost a sexual harassment lawsuit in New York against her employer because she was not paid, thus disqualifying her from receiving employee’s protections under New York Human Rights Law.

If this amendment is passed, New York City will become the first city to extend civil rights protections to unpaid interns, covering thousands of interns throughout the city. It will not only extend protections against discrimination based on gender (women are 77% more likely than men to be an unpaid intern), but also based on race, creed, sexual orientation, age, class, disability, income, marital status, etc.

Come to the meeting to be a part of history and show your support for this landmark decision!
