KATHLEEN HANNA will be speaking in room 914 of NYU’s Kimmel Center at 60 Washington Square South on March 6th, 2014, at 7pm.
Kathleen is a feminist activist and musician, best known for her groundbreaking performances as a member of the punk band, Bikini Kill, and her multimedia electronic group, Le Tigre. Kathleen is currently performing with her band, The Julie Ruin. She is also the co –owner of two independent record labels.
Kathleen is widely known for her role as a pivotal figure in “Riot Grrrl,” a feminist movement in the underground music scene. Besides creating the anthems that fueled it, she also penned several extremely influential political ‘zines’ (self published magazines). As a result, her personal papers were recently aquired by NYU’s Fales Archive.
The Punk Singer, a critically acclaimed feature length documentary about Kathleen was released in 2013 by IFC Films. The film includes 20 years of archival footage and intimate interviews, taking viewers on a fascinating tour of contemporary music while offering a glimpse into the life of this fearless feminist leader.
