Inner Lanscapes – Robert Zurer

Robert Zurer is a native New Yorker currently living and working in Brooklyn. He is primarily self-taught although he studied privately with Wade Schuman for some time.

Zurer’s process is entirely intuitive. His work almost always turns out describing human struggle and living with paradox. The paintings are narratives of inner journeys. But the act of painting itself is an inner journey.

There is this delectable “unknown” hidden everywhere, behind everything.

As the artist stated:

“If I listen, it calls, and if I call, it listens. I start my work using random lines or shapes. I then try hard to shut my mind up, pay close attention and wait. Sometimes something happens. It feels like an idea or an impulse is coming into me from outside, as if I am receiving a Message from the Mystery or perhaps from our collective unconscious.

I am now responsible. I cannot think or hesitate because then it is lost. It is a volley, a call and response, a dialog. I make a move, wait, then another, and so forth. At each step the whole changes. New forms emerge, others must be sacrificed for the whole.”
