FLOATING LANTERNS – a poem by Mercedes Roffé

For Night #4 of Theresa Wong’s weeklong residency at The Stone, this evening’s performance is a musical work inspired by the poetry of Mercedes Roffé, one of Argentina’s leading contemporary poets. ‘Las linternas flotantes’, published in 2009, was for Roffé, “a reaction to things that left us speechless: September 11, Argentina’s economic debacle…the tsunami, Hurricane Katrina…and so many things that seemed to come together in just a few years, things that were so disastrous for the whole world.” Wong draws upon this collection of poems and especially Roffé’s use of anaphora as a sonic motif to sound a collective response to those things that continue to leave us speechless. Wong is especially thrilled to bring together many special guests in this performance, including Adria Otte from the Bay Area, new arrival to NYC Bergrún Snæbjörnsdóttir and Boston-based Rachel Devorah.
